Holy Wednesday: Betrayed by a Friend

“Then one of the twelve, whose name was Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, ‘What will you give me if I deliver him over to you?’” — Matthew 26:14–16

There’s a quiet ache in Holy Wednesday. The plotting begins. Judas, one of the twelve, sells Jesus out for silver. The intimacy of betrayal cuts deeper than any enemy’s sword. Judas knew Jesus—heard him teach, saw him heal, shared meals with him. Yet for a price, he handed him over.

This day is a sobering reminder that betrayal doesn’t come from enemies—it comes from those close enough to kiss us. Jesus knows what it is to be betrayed, and he meets us in our own wounds. He also calls us to examine our own faithfulness. Where are we tempted to trade Jesus for comfort, approval, or control?

Prayer:

Jesus, you were betrayed so that I could be forgiven. Search my heart. Help me walk in loyal love, not half-hearted allegiance. Keep me near your side. Amen.
