Is Praying in Tongues Biblical?

In this teaching from 1 Corinthians 12 and 14, we discuss what Scripture says about praying in tongues, interpretation, spiritual gifts, order in worship, and the ultimate goal of transformation into the image of Jesus.

The lesson begins with an important correction and clarification: in 1 Corinthians 14, Paul distinguishes prophecy from tongues. Prophecy is intelligible speech that builds up the church, while tongues spoken publicly must be interpreted so the body can be edified.

We also explore the purpose of praying in the Spirit: the Holy Spirit helping us pray when human words are not enough, guiding us beyond empty ritual into deeper dependence on God. This teaching emphasizes biblical faithfulness, humility, discernment, and love, reminding us that spiritual gifts are never measures of superiority or salvation. They are given by the Spirit for the building up of the body.

Above all, the goal is not merely to seek an experience, but to be transformed by Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit.
