Why We Pray: Not to Perform, but to Be Changed

We’re kicking off a new series called Pray Like This with an honest question: Why do we pray?

In this message from Matthew 6:5–8, Pastor Matt shares how God used the story of Jonah—and even a week of freezing weather—to expose something uncomfortable: how easily we can pour our energy into protecting our comforts while ignoring what matters most. That conviction leads to a simple but life-changing invitation: pray.

This sermon explores what prayer is (and what it isn’t). Prayer isn’t performance. It isn’t a way to impress others. It isn’t a technique for manipulating God with volume, length, or the “right” words. Prayer is about being with the Father—drawing near, taking the mask off, and letting God’s presence change us from the inside out.

If you’ve felt stuck, spiritually dry, distracted, or frustrated with your own heart, this message is for you. God isn’t calling you to impress him—he’s calling you close.
