Acts 17: Faith That Thinks | Reason, Suffering & the Gospel

Can the Christian faith stand up to honest questions?

In Acts 17, we find the Apostle Paul doing more than simply proclaiming the gospel—he reasons from the Scriptures, answers objections, and demonstrates that Christianity is both deeply spiritual and intellectually compelling. The gospel invites faith, but it is not a leap into irrationality. It is a response to the God who has revealed Himself in history through Jesus Christ.

In this week’s Wellspring Bible Study, we begin Acts 17 by examining Paul’s ministry in Thessalonica and explore several foundational questions for every believer:

  • How does the Holy Spirit keep our hearts soft?
  • Why do discontentment and comparison harden our hearts?
  • What does it mean to “reason” with people about the Christian faith?
  • How should Christians respond to the problem of suffering?
  • Can faith and science coexist?
  • Why does the Apostles’ Creed specifically mention Pontius Pilate?

Along the way, we discuss apologetics—the thoughtful defense of the Christian faith—and why Christians should never be afraid of honest questions. While God remains infinitely greater than our understanding, He has revealed Himself in ways that are true, coherent, and trustworthy.

Ultimately, every argument points us back to Jesus. The Holy Spirit softens our hearts, teaches us to trust God’s goodness even when we don’t understand our circumstances, and leads us into the truth revealed in Christ.

Whether you’re a longtime believer, wrestling with difficult questions, or simply wanting to deepen your understanding of Scripture, we hope this study encourages you to love God with all your heart, soul, and mind.
